Many people, due to exceptional and unintentional circumstances, have nearly died, or even entered a state of clinical death, and then returned to life: they have experienced what is called a near-death experience (NDE). These experiences are either kept quiet because they are considered unbelievable, or they receive significant publicity as "proof" of life after death.

Despite countless variations, most of these NDE experiences share considerable similarities, particularly in the common points that can be summarized as follows: People have the sensation of leaving their bodies, of seeing what is happening in relation to their bodies (a hospital recovery room, for example), of entering a tunnel at the end of which they see a being of light; they then generally experience a feeling of bliss and may encounter deceased relatives; they visit a celestial realm, which nevertheless has an impassable final boundary (at least for those who return, as in Luke 8:55).

Given the sheer number of testimonies, it is established that these NDEs are undeniable realities, not hallucinations of deranged minds. Theories about their true nature abound, and the pseudo-scientific interpretations one reads seem quite far-fetched. However, the Bible provides a fairly coherent understanding of the scope of these NDEs.

These NDEs confirm the reality of the soul, distinct from the body, and capable of possessing all the characteristics of a personality. On the other hand, the realm visited after the tunnel cannot be paradise for several reasons (there is no clear and distinct enjoyment of the relationship with the person of Christ, and many people who have had these NDEs do not even have the Christian faith); it can therefore only be a TRANSITIONAL zone before entering paradise or the place of torment (hell), which lies beyond this impassable boundary from which no one can return.

This visited realm corresponds to, or is part of, the heavenly places described in the Epistle to the Ephesians. Surprisingly, "spiritual powers of wickedness" (Satan and fallen angels) are found there (Ephesians 6:10-18 and several scenes from the Old Testament, 1 Kings 22, Job 1, Zechariah 3, and others), even though they are to be cast out in due time, according to Revelation 12:8-9 and Luke 10:18.

The devil uses these NDEs to make souls believe that all is peace after death, and that all souls go to a place of happiness, regardless of their life (this is why the media are interested in these experiences). By thus cauterizing consciences, Satan turns souls away from salvation and repentance toward God.

There is every reason to believe that the beings of light accompanying souls beyond the tunnel are angels of Satan (demons) disguised as angels of light (2 Corinthians 11:14) who attempt to deceive souls likely to return to Earth. Luke 4:5 already gives the example of the devil showing off all the kingdoms of the earth in an instant (!) and falsely offering glorious promises (Luke 4:6, "...Luke 4:6, ...all this power and glory; for it is given up to me, and to whomsoever I will I give it...."). The existence of an insurmountable barrier from which there is no return is also taught in Luke 16:26.

When examined in detail, the descriptions of these NDEs offer no significant additional information beyond what is already found in the Bible. However, the Bible says much more than they do, and what the Bible says about eternal life is clear, certain, and solemn: it is crucial to be right with God as soon as possible.

If you want clarity on these matters, it is much simpler and more reliable to stick to what God says in His Word, which is the truth (John 17:17). This is always best. Luke 16:19-31 is the passage that provides the most detail, but others complement it.
